20 January - 10 March, 2017
Paviljoen Welgelegen, Dreef 3, Haarlem
Anoek Steketee‘s beautiful work “Near Soppeng, Sulawesi” from her series “The past is a Foreign Country“, is being exhibited in the groupshow Beyond the Horizon in Haarlem (Dreef exposities).
Opening: Friday 20 January 2017 at 5 pm in Haarlem.
‘Near Soppeng, Sulawesi’ shows a bluegreen landscape in Indonesia, where nothing happens, undefined, incomprehensible. There is lack of activity. Yet it is the place in South Sulawesi where the Dutch troops executed many Indonesians in 1947.
Steketee’s low camera position forces our eyes to the disturbing thickness of the primeval forest in the distance. It was together with journalist Arnold van Bruggen that Steketee looked for images that express the impossibility of this unambiguous history.
