Jasper de Beijer in Eye Filmmuseum: Virtual Diaramas
November 7, 2019
FLATLAND is happy to announce that the riveting VR experience The Exhibition from Jasper de Beijer will be on view in the Eye Filmmuseum. The VR production is to be exhibited in the group show Virtual Diarama’s, initiated by the programme Xtended. This program aims to give attention to artistic virtual reality productions and previously presented work by such artists and filmmakers as Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Laurie Anderson, Marina Abramović and Tsai Ming-liang.
The Exhibition is the immersive VR experience Jasper de Beijer created this summer as artist-in-residence at WIELS, Brussels. It shows a digital reconstruction of physical museum halls and objects from various colonial museums, brought together as contemporary patchworked tableaux vivants. The route that the visitor chooses, dictates the course and content of the exhibition. Since the birth of the museum in the 19th century dioramas are being used to show the visitor a slice of reality. These slices of pseudo reality confront the visitor with a point in time and place – frozen in a confined box, while the subjectiveness depends on era and perspective.
The group exhibition Virtual Diarama’s can be seen in Eye from 13 to 24 November, and presents six Dutch artists’ digital work that recalibrate the dividing line between old and new media.
November 12 is the opening, by invitation only. At the opening the artists will present their work in a round table discussion with Michel Reilhac, VR pioneer and curator of the VR section of the Venice film festival. There will be a live cinema performance by Tupac Martir, Cosmos Within Us, after the group discussion.
