Souvenir d’Intime, the new solo exhibition of Ruud van Empel
March 2, 2016
The show at Flatland Gallery will focus on Ruud van Empel’s latest works, his still lifes and self portraits.
More personal than before, the photographed objects from the artist’s childhood and youth put together form a reminder of the lost past and the artist’s parents. In Van Empel’s recent Still life – Photo, the work is created out of personal photos of the artist. What is remarkable about the Souvenir d’Intime series is that they are monochrome. Van Empel adjusts the backgrounds to tonally match the displayed objects in the pictures. There are no distracting colour contrast, allowing the viewer to keep a better focus on the composition and the subject; his concern for what Proust described in the episode of the madeleine in ‘A la recherche du temps perdu’, the subject of involuntary memory.
The exhibition will be introduced by Curator Frank van de Schoor.
