In 1996 during a period of working at the European Ceramic Centre in Den Bosch, Smit discovered the possibilities of clay. She decided to stop with her lithography and drawing and devote herself entirely to this malleable material. This had led to a large number of ceramic sculptures, drawing room pieces, a selection from which is to be seen in the exhibition in the Kunsthal in Rotterdam in 2010. Her manifest fascination with curiosity cabinets, freak shows, Wunderkammer objects and reliquaries leads to a sense of estrangements in her art.
